This
Was The Best Year Ever For The Annual Freedom to Move Walk and Wheel
for Dystonia Medical Research
Held In Valley East
written by Mary Guy |
|
I am so excited!!! This year was our best year ever
for raising money at our annual Freedom to Move Walk and
Wheel
for Dystonia Medical Research. Thank you so much for all your hard
work. We raised $15,555 which includes the $1500 Dwayne Backer hopes
to get from the matching program at Wal-Mart. Congratulations and
thank you to all the participants and the people that sponsored
them. Special thanks go to Dwayne Backer who had another personal
best collecting $4590.If you add in the $1500 from Wal-Mart his
total comes to $6090. And
with the mail situation these days there may be a few more cheques
coming. Dwayne won the prize for the highest earner. The prize for
the family that earned the most went to Team Guy for a total of
$4910 and Team Gagne came in second with a total of $1329.50 with
$511.50 of that coming from the Sgt Rick McDonald Memorial Fund.
Members from the Elizabeth Fry Chapter
IODE
came out to support the cause. I was happy to see a new family, the
Colvin’s, come out. Also new member Wendy Williams helped at the
desk registering walkers along with my experienced crew of Brenda
Morris, Sue Leroux and Lise Depatie. Thank
you
ladies. Coco Lariviere’s family came out to support her as always
and raised $1097.50 I was also glad to see the Thompson family out
for the walk. Emily from SNAP was there to take pictures with Curtis
Thompson following her with my camera. Pauline Backer did a brief
interview in French for CBC French Radio. It aired the next morning
on the news. Thanks Pauline. France Gelinas, MPP for Nickel Belt
arrived as we began the door prizes and finished the day with a
brief talk about the coalition of all the brain disorders. These are
some of the highlights of our amazing morning.
Special thanks to Linda Thompson for getting all
the food donated and collecting it all with the help of her son,
Curtis. Thank you to our food sponsors Tim Horton’s (Hanmer),
Dumas YIG, Metro (Val Caron) and Neil’s YIG. Thanks also to Len
Shymkiw for his dazzling BBQ skills along with his helper Curtis
Thompson. Thanks to the Thompson’s for bringing out their BBQ year
after year.
We had some great door prizes and I want to thank the donors:
Plaza 69 Pharmacy, Staples on the Kingsway, I.D.A. Dowling,
Silver
City
,
M&M Meats, Rusty Cellars, Topper’s Pizza, Scotiabank,
Barrydowne Paint & Wallpaper, Wal-Mart, Querney’s Office Plus
and
Chico
’s
Bowl & Sports Lounge. Thanks also to the staff at the Howard
Armstrong Recreation Centre who were a great help. Thanks also to
Allison and Carolyn of the St. John Ambulance for coming out to the
walk to make sure that everyone was safe.
We had our best walk ever! Thank you to everyone for making
it such a success!
Sincerely,
Mary Guy

LACROIX FINDS SUCCESS AS A HOME BASED ENTREPRENEUR AS A STAMPIN’
UP! DEMONSTRATOR WITH THE
SUDBURY
STAMPERS |
|
When you create something handmade,
whether it's a card or a gift or an invitation, you're taking the
time to show someone you care. And the recipients of these heartfelt
expressions are touched; their lives are brightened, and your
relationships are strengthened. That’s what I do. I
love what I do and I share what I love, as I help others enjoy
creativity and worthwhile accomplishments.
Have you ever used a rubber stamp? I love the look on my
customer’s faces right after they make their first creation -
whether it be a card, a handmade gift or a scrapbooking page.
I have been a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator for the past 2.5 years.
I only signed up to be a demonstrator for the discount. I had
a full time job and had not planned on making this a career.
It wasn’t long before I started sharing my love for rubber
stamping and had over 300 customers. I was working almost 100
hours per week with my two jobs and loving it very much.

Ontario Student Survey Appealing To All Secondary School Students |
|
The 2011 Ontario Student Survey is a
project of the Ontario Student Trustees' Association, the sole
democratically elected educational stakeholder in
Canada
.
The Ontario Student Survey is a student initiated and student
led survey with 10 questions on hot educational topics, as selected
by students.
Ontario
high school or middle school students who complete the survey will
be eligible to win a series of prizes including a $500 bursary and
an iPad.
The 2010 Ontario Student Survey garnered
national media attention; the media coverage, as well as the
results, can be found on www.studentsurvey.ca
The Ontario Student Trustees' Association is also launching a
parallel Ontario Parent Survey.
Parents and students are being asked the same questions, and
the results will show where they agree and where they are miles
apart. The results
of both surveys will be released in the fall and will provide topics
for debate by all who are passionate about education in the
province
of
Ontario
.
The questions:
1.
Do you think that a student wanting to establish a Gay
Straight Alliance club in their school should be allowed to do so?
2.
If the Grade 10 Civics/Careers course were optional, would
you take it?
3.
Do you feel that healthy food options are being provided
within your school?
4.
Do you feel pressure to finish high school in four years?
5.
Is it ever acceptable for student and teachers to connect
through social media outlets (e.g. Facebook)?
6.
Should teachers who coach/supervise extra-curricular
activities be recognized for their contribution?
7.
If cyber-bullying occurs between students outside of school
time, should the school take action?
8.
Do you feel that sex-ed class adequately addresses concerns
of a sexual nature that you have encountered and/or expect to
encounter?
9.
If you or a friend was experiencing mental health problems,
such as stress, anxiety, or
depression, would you know where to go to get help?
10.
Has a fee charged for sports, teams, or extra curricular
activities ever prevented you from participating?
Both surveys can be taken at www.studentsurvey.ca
from May 16 - June 16.

STATS CAN
INDICATES THAT MOST HOMES HAVE INTERNET
ACCESS TODAY
|
|
A
report by STATS CAN indicates that by the end of 2010, more than 79%
of all homes had internet access. This is significant evidence that
the use of the internet as a communication tool has grown to
tremendous proportions and is clearly going to have an impact on our
quality of life in the future.
It also means that local businesses will have to pay particular
attention to how they position themselves in the marketplace as they
try to attract new customers. Shoppers are definitely going to be
using the internet more and more to educate themselves on the goods
and services that are available from businesses and if you don’t
have a presence on the internet, you are going to be left behind.
Interestingly enough, of the 21% of the households that do not have
internet access, more than half, expressed no interest in being
connected. The remainder cited cost as the greatest obstacle,
however, many of those people also indicated that they frequently
use computers at the local library to go on the net. |
