New School Construction In Val Caron Seen As A Sign Of Growth

The Rainbow District School Board seeking public input into the construction of a new elementary-level French Immersion school in Val Caron. The new JK to Grade 8 school would house students who are currently attending Valley View Public School and Val Caron Public School . Both schools are overcrowded and are in need of modern facilities such as a new library.

The School Valuation Committee has held two public meetings already and will be holding its final public meeting on March 2, 2006 at 7 p.m. at Valley View Public School in Val Caron. If plans go ahead, the new school will be ready for occupation in time for the September 2007 start of the 2007-2008 school year. At that time both existing schools will be demolished.

There is absolutely no question that the new school will benefit the students. There is absolutely no question that the new school will benefit the community. There is absolutely no question that the new school will benefit the local economy. There is absolutely no question that the new school will benefit the Rainbow District School Board. The question many are asking is, how many more meetings do you need?

The new building will be constructed on the existing grounds of the current Valley View Public School and will eventually have room for 500 students. It will also have enhanced facilities for physical education, instrumental music, visual arts, computer technology, a library and special education. In addition there would be a full daycare program on site and be much more cost-effective to operate.

The Rainbow District School Board has realized exactly what every other school board has known for some time. Valley East is growing in leaps and bounds compared to the rest of the region. While it is often hard to justify new construction in a city such as Greater Sudbury where the overall population is in a state of decline, Valley East is an anomaly and must be treated as such. The need to build a new school has been accepted by other school boards which have already, or which will soon be opening new schools in the community. The Rainbow District School Board is merely responding after the fact.
