CHRISTMAS HAMPER PROGRAM

St. Vincent de Paul Society Comes Through Again For Over 110 Families During Christmas Food Basket Drive

Christine Collin, shown with two of her key volunteer assistants, Leo Gratton on the left and Guy Hebert on the right, has been one of the co-ordinators of the annual Christmas Food Basket Campaign with the Valley East Chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for the past four years. This year, over 110 families were spared hunger at Christmas as a result of the generous donations of Valley East residents and revenue generated through sales of recycled clothing and furniture at St. Vincent de Paul at the top of the hill in Val Caron. Over $10,000 worth of food was delivered or picked up on December 20 from the St. Kevin's Parish Hall in Val Therese. The value of each basket varied, depending on the number of people in the family, but the food value was in the $100 to $150 range. The Food Bank at St. Vincent de Paul needs to raise approximately $4000 each month to serve about 120 to 140 families and single persons each month. Food is distributed during the 3rd week of each month. Anyone needing assistance is asked to drop in an fill out an application at St. Vincent de Paul.
In the photo to the left, the President of St. Vincent de Paul, Esthelle, was busy directing traffic during the Food Basket delivery session.
Doris Beardy, a volunteer with St. Vincent de Paul, spends a lot of time in the Food Bank section packing orders for local families who are in need of food to help them get through rough times during the month. Donations of food and cash are always welcome.
