CKLU 96.7 FM

On Monday, January 7, 2008, a new chapter in the history of Education in Greater Sudbury will begin.

On that day, between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. residents of Northern Ontario will be able to tune in to the inaugural broadcast of what is expected to be a very informative and though-provoking two hours of interviews, editorial comments, inspirational stories, and discussions of hot topics of interest to students, parents, grandparents and teachers.

This a "talk show" that will focus on the issues of importance today in the world of education. It is a show that will stimulate conversation and will urge readers to send in their own comments and opinions on education matters that impact upon every segment of society.

The show will be hosted by Robert Kirwan, a well known educator from Greater Sudbury who operates a private practice as an Independent Education, Career & Personal Development Specialist. His firm is known as The Greater Sudbury Learning Clinic and is best known as the largest and most comprehensive personal tutoring agency north of Barrie.

For Kirwan, The Learning Clinic: Inside Education is a natural extension of his other education-related activities which include all of the web sites linked to the right of this column as well as his weekly Learning Clinic column which appears in The Vision Paper in Valley East. Bringing his message to radio will allow listeners from across the north to benefit from his broad perspective on educational issues facing students, parents and teachers today. It is a show that thousands will be tuning in to each week.

AN OVERVIEW BY
ROBERT KIRWAN

Since my retirement from the classroom in June 2001, I have been involved in a number of initiatives and ventures, all of which have enabled me to maintain a close eye on the developments and trends of the education system in Ontario, and indeed, around the world.

I have worked as a Secondary School Liaison with CDI College for a year, visiting over 100 different Grade 10 to 12 classes from Sudbury to North Bay. The insights I gained into the education system from talking to students and teachers in our secondary schools have formed much of the philosophical foundation upon which The Learning Clinic has been built.

With the opening of my private practice in the spring of 2007, I have been able to focus my entire energy into developing several areas of highest priority for students, parents and teachers of the Greater Sudbury Area.

  • The Greater Sudbury Learning Clinic Tutoring Agency now provides personal in-home, one-on-one tutoring services to all students at the elementary, secondary and post-secondary levels. Furthermore, it provides local university students in teachers' college with an opportunity to develop their teaching skills by working with young people at all grade levels.

  • Young Community Builders of Greater Sudbury is a web site dedicated to recognizing and showcasing the accomplishments and achievements of individuals and groups who are making a significant contribution through the schools of the region.

  • The Greater Sudbury Education Services Directory is a work in progress which will provide local students, parents and teachers with comprehensive information about the businesses and organizations that provide learning enhancing goods and services in the Greater Sudbury Area.

  • Valley East Today is a community web site and weekly online news magazine that contains information and articles of interest to people living in the fastest growing segment of the City of Greater Sudbury. The schools of Valley East are a main feature of this web site.

  • Student Page is being developed into a "central" clearing house of information and links for students, parents and teachers. A major feature of Student Page will be a special "Discount Section" which will contain information about a wide variety of businesses and organizations in the Greater Sudbury Area that are willing to provide special discount incentives for people who support their businesses.

An now, INSIDE EDUCATION, a weekly talk show about education and learning will bring everything together and allow listeners with an opportunity to express their own points of view about key issues and trends in education.

INSIDE EDUCATION is a weekly show about education!

Each week I will be hosting two hours of lively interviews and discussions about issues and trends that are of interest to students, parents and teachers of all ages and in all jurisdictions.

This will be a radio show where the content will be "listener-driven" with special guests and discussions on topics that you-the listener have requested.

At this time I want to give you some idea of the kinds of things you will hear when you tune in to INSIDE EDUCATION from the campus of Laurentian University each week.

WEEKLY CO-HOSTS
  • Each week I plan on introducing two members of the Greater Sudbury Learning Clinic's Registry of Tutors to act as my special co-hosts. There will be approximately 20 to 30 co-hosts on the show on a rotating basis in order to provide my listeners with variety and different perspectives.

  • The co-hosts will participate in discussions with me about hot-topics and trends in education, sharing their opinions and comments.

  • The co-hosts will also provide information to listeners about their own particular post-secondary school programs and their personal career aspirations.
SPECIAL GUESTS
  • Most weeks I will have one or more special guests on the show with me.

  • These will be students, parents, teachers and persons from the community who have an interest in what goes on in the world of education in our area.

  • I welcome the opportunity to recognize the accomplishments and achievements of some of our exemplary students in secondary schools throughout the area. We will all look forward to hearing their stories.
EXPERT GUESTS
  • From time to time I will invite experts from the community to come on the air to discuss specific topics that will be of interest to listeners.

  • Some of these guests will be experts in the field of education financing; health care; teaching; fitness; computers; etc.

  • We will ask some guests to appear on the show to talk about career opportunities in their respective fields and to give students some insight into what they might expect as they explore and develop their own career plans.
HOT TOPICS OF THE WEEK
  • Each week we will spend a few moments reviewing some of the hot topics of the day in education.

  • Tuitions, homework, provincial testing, violence on campus, school closings, etc. are all things that come up in the news every week. We will keep you up to date on what is hot and what is not every week.

  • Some of our guests will be given an opportunity to comment on these topics and share their opinions with our listeners.

 INSPIRATIONAL EDITORIALS

  • I will take time to read some inspirational editorials for students, parents and teachers each week.

  • These editorials may be used to begin panel discussions with our special guests.
QUESTION & ANSWER PERIOD
  • We will encourage listeners to send us questions that they would like addressed on the show.

  • Each week I will spend time going over some of those questions and offering my best answers.

  • We will also hear the opinions of our special guests on some of the more appropriate questions.
WHAT'S NEW IN OUR SCHOOLS
  • We will take time to provide you with information about new initiatives and programs that are being introduced in our local elementary and secondary schools.

  • Special guests from the local school boards will be invited to come to the show to discuss these programs.
MUSICAL INTERLUDES
  • Each different segment of the show will be separated with a musical interlude where we will be playing a popular song from the past to add to the entertainment value of the program.
