What Do You Do With a Bird That Will Live To Be Over 80?

Visitors to Paula’s K9 Country Club in Val Caron always have something to say about the two Blue & Gold Macaws being raised by owner Paula Martel-Lavallee. ‘Ariel’, perched on the arm of Julie Mongeon at the left of the picture, is only 4 months old. ‘Crackers’, which can be seen on the Paula’s shoulder, is already 13 years old. Others in the photo are Amanda Lavallee, 2nd from the left, and Jason Larose. The birds are Paula’s personal pets, although she may consider breeding them at some point in the future. They live to be in excess of 80 years of age, so anyone who intends to pick up one of these fine feathered friends had better be looking at a long-term relationship. Macaws, which are tropical birds, often sell for more than $2000.

Crackers and Ariel were on display during the Valley Roads Country Tour in July, entertaining visitors to the site. Paula organized a scavenger hunt for the kids and held a barbecue to raise money for the S.P.C.A.
