Experience of a Lifetime For Hanmer's Danielle Taillefer

It may have taken a while for the significance of the event to sink in for 14 year old Danielle Taillefer, but once she held the two containers filled with water from the Arctic and Pacific Oceans, she realized that she was participating in something that she would cherish forever. Danielle was one of the 5000 Canadians taking part in the Trans Canada Trail Relay. Water from the Arctic and Pacific are being carried eastward, while at the same time another leg of the relay with water from the Atlantic is heading westward. The three containers will be united in Hull, Quebec, at the National Capital Commission facility on September 9, signifying the completion of the 16,500 kilometres Trans Canada Trail.

According to Melissa Bresnahan, the co-ordinator of the project for the Sudbury Region, it will take some 3 to 5 years to construct the trail right across the country. There will be over 100 km of the trail in the Sudbury Region, crossing parts of Capreol, Azilda, Valley East, Sudbury and Walden. The total cost for the Sudbury leg is expected to be approximately $3M in value, including donated equipment and materials.

AIt was fun,@ explained Danielle when asked about her experience. AIt was pretty exciting to be part of something so big.@

Danielle earned her spot on the relay team by winning a radio contest on Q92. She was one of 50 people who helped carry the water from Espanola to Markstay.
