Provincial Championships "An Incredible Feeling" For Local Ball Players

"It was one of the most incredible feelings I have ever had," explained Peter Churan when commenting on taking part in the ‘Over 40' Provincial Slo-Pitch Championships. "I’ve been on winning teams before, but to actually play on a team that is the best in Ontario, at any level, is an amazing experience."

Members of the winning team, known as ‘Team Labatte’, included, in the back row from the left: Larry Pederson, J.Y. Assenlin, Gilles Theriault, Rob Fabiilli and Rick Fabiilli. Front row: Marcel Miron, Gord Milne, Keith (Whipper) Reid, Roger Givoque, Dan Verilli and Pete Churan.

After posting a 4 and 1 record in round robin play, ‘Team Labatt’ faced the undefeated ‘Fermented Fathers’ in the Championship. In order to win, ‘Team Labatt’ had to come up with two victories due to the double-knock-out nature of the event. The first game was a see-saw battle which went into extra innings before ‘Team Labatt’ etched out a seven to six win. The next game was one of the most exciting contests of the tournament, with ‘Team Labatt’ ending up on the top side of an 11 to 8 victory to take the honours as the best Over-40 Slo-Pitch club in the Province of Ontario. They now qualify for the 2001 Nationals.
