The Tradition Continues This Weekend During the 26th Annual K. of C.

Regardless of whether or not Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow on Groundhog Day this Friday, there is one thing you can count on for sure - The Chevaliers de Colomb/Knights of Columbus Council 5005 will be kicking off the 26th Annual Winter Fair with a fun Karaoke & Dance beginning at 8 p.m. At the K of C Hall on Emily Street in Hanmer. That’s right! Mark February 2, 3 and 4th on your calendar!

We may have lost a lot of things as a result of our amalgamation as the City of Greater Sudbury, but we will never lose the spirit of Valley East as long as the Knights of Columbus Council 5005 continue to bring us their two big events of the year - namely the Summer Festival and the Winter Fair. This is the first big event of the year in Ward 3, and, whereas it is always important that we celebrate as a community, the Winter Fair provides us with an excellent opportunity to do so.

The Karaoke & Dance on Friday night will feature the ever popular, D.J. “Gilles Coutu”. He can always be counted on to keep the “place rocking” from start to finish.

If you are looking for a great way to start the day on Saturday and Sunday, make sure you drop in for the famous K of C breakfast special of bacon and eggs for only $4. That should last you until the  $5 spaghetti supper is served at 4 p.m. For your after dinner entertainment, you can stay around and enjoy the Fiddler’s Open Stage from 6 to 9 p.m. Registration will be required prior to 5 p.m. so if you need more information, be sure to contact Daniel Clement at 969-3860.

Saturday Night is bound to be a night for celebration. You can go for an adult hayride at 9 p.m. for only $5 and then come back for the Barn Dance which also begins at 9 p.m. for another $5. What a way to finish a full day of outdoor and indoor fun. There are plenty of activities for the children including a tyke hockey tournament from 10 to 2 p.m. Saturday will also feature motorcycle snow drags, pony rides and sleigh rides from 1 to 5 p.m.

Sunday has always been a popular day during the Winter Fair. The 4th Annual Snowmobile Races are expected to attract hundreds to watch the excitement which begins at 12 noon. Some of the fastest machines in the north will be demonstrating their power against each other. Another attraction which has a large following is the indoor Youth Talent Show which runs from 1 to 3 p.m. To register your child, call Nicole as soon as possible at 969-5529. After the talent show, Gilles Coutu will round out the afternoon with more karaoke until 5 p.m.

The Winter Fair is expected to attract over 4000 people to the various events during the weekend. Proceeds from the weekend go to the Knights of Columbus for distribution to local charities. For more information, call 969-8895. Make sure you all take time to visit the Chevalier de Colomb/Knights of Columbus Local #5005 at their Winter Festival on Emily Street in Hanmer! It’s the event of the season in Valley East - don’t miss it!
