ROGER'S SPORTS LINE

Welcome to a new feature to the Valley East Today Weekly Online News Magazine. "Roger's Sports Line" is a column that will be written by well-known local sports personality, Roger Legendre.

This past weekend was certainly most beautiful. One could certainly admire the wonders of Nature. All the trees are in the full colors of the autumn season. My weekend was taken up with my four grandchildren ranging in ages of 4 to 9 years old. It was just fantastic to enjoy their company, take walks with them in the pure northern air and play a little bit of touch football or soccer in the back yard full of falling leaves from my neighbor’s trees.

On with some sports. It seems that our junior “A” Wolves have taken a better faith and even with a couple of close road losses this past weekend, they certainly are showing some good improvements. They are not in the penalty box as often and their defensive woes of early games have improved.

On the local secondary football school level, Confederation Secondary School took over sole possession of first place while St Benedicts, Lo-Ellen Park and Lockerby are right behind breeding down their neck. It should be strong fight to determine the playoff positions.

In basketball, the strong Lasalle Lancers senior girls seem well on their way to another city championship with still a month of the regular season to go. In division II, both French catholic secondary schools junior teams seem headed for a collision course and a division final as they both sit at 4-0 with a few weeks left in the schedule. Now the tournaments for the Greater City of Sudbury as well as Northern Ontario get busier. This coming weekend, the Junior Vees program, under the leadership of John Desormeaux has a midget, junior and senior tournament for girls called the Royalty Cup going on and starting on Friday October the 13th at two sites ( St Charles College and Ecole Secondaire Sacre Coeur). Games will start at 3:30 on Friday at both locations with championships scheduled for 5 P.M. on Saturday afternoon at Sacre Coeur. The following weekend, Timmins host their annual and very popular Sister Mary Memorial tournament (several local secondary schools are entered) followed by the annual Franco Ontario Girls Tournament also in Timmins on the weekend of October the 19th to the 21st.The busy October schedule finishes off with the 4th annual “Air Time” for junior and senior girls hosted by the Greater Sudbury Basketball Officials Association and of which I’m the co-convener. I’ll be reporting on all the results from each of these tournaments plus some exciting photos of these young ladies in action. At the University level, the men from Laurentian are returning victorious from Montreal after capturing the Concordia Stingers Nike tournament with an exciting double overtime victory of 92-89 over the Huskies of the University of Saskatchewan . Brady Bolan of Laurentian was named tournament MVP.This certainly bodes well for the Voyageurs as the regular season approaches in early November. The Greater Sudbury Ladies Competitive Basketball League, under the direction of Commissioner, Roger Legendre, is still looking for young ladies of 17 years of age or more to join the league. For further information you can contact Roger at 969-7268 or 691-7268 or email him with all your particulars to er_legendre@sympatico.ca.

In soccer the men of Laurentian continue to be impressive with an eight game undefeated streak even after a heartbreaking tie of 1-1 in the final moments of the game (injury time) to the 3rd nationally ranked Toronto Varsity Blues. Both the men and ladies soccer teams travel to Ottawa next weekend with scheduled games against the Carleton Ravens and the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

In the Fall Classic that is the World Series of Baseball, it’s nice to see someone else instead of the Yankees fighting for the 2006 crown. I have a penchant for the Mets of New York and I guess you must know why with the former nice guy and Blue Jay, Carlos Delgado playing for them. Go Mets Go!!

This coming Saturday October the 14th , the Rick McDonald Memorial fastball League will host its first annual Four Men/Women or Mix Best Ball tournament at the Clear view Golf Course in Val Carbonate. Entry fee is $40,00 which includes the green fees and a cart. There will be awards for the top four players, the final four players, closest to the pin and longest drive as well as several prizes will be drawn. The tournament will be followed later on that day at 7 P.M. in Cranky Joe’s Roadhouse Sports Bar with the banquet and awards celebration. At the celebration, awards will be handed out for top players in each position as well as top rookie, most improved player, top veteran player, most sportsmanlike player, most sportsmanlike team, regular season MVP and playoff MVP .For those interested in the golf tournament you can contact Roger with the same numbers mentioned above in basketball.

Stay healthy, take walks, jog a bit and enjoy the remaining weeks of this colorful autumn season!

2006 CHAMPIONS DECLARED IN VALLEY EAST  MENS'  SLO PITCH LEAGUE

The 2006 Season is over now for the Valley East Men's Slo Pitch League. Team Kaos dominated the league from start to finish, winning the 'A' Championship over Gonga's Grill in three straight games. In fact, even though some games were close, Team Kaos lost only one game all year long.

Other Championship winners included: Neil's Independent/Parmalat in the 'B' Division; Autotech in the 'C' Division; and Optimus Prime in the 'D' Division.

The standings for each of the first and second half of the season, as well as both playoff series results can be found by following the links below.

We want to express our sincere appreciation to Brian Beaupre, shown on the left, for providing this information to us all season long. He has been extremely dependable in delivering the up-to-date stats to Valley East Today in time for our Tuesday publications. We look forward to the summer of 2007 for another great season.

The closest Championship Series of the year was in the Budweiser Division Finals as Auto Tech and Moeric Services had to go to a fifth and deciding game to decide the eventual winner. Popularity of "Welcome Home Gift Basket" Is Clear Indication Of Growth Of The Community - Over 200 New Residents Receive Gift Basket Since July

When it comes to people who are new to the community, there are two business owners who tend to meet them all. Of course we are referring to Mike Lemieux, on the left in the photo, who along with his brother, Mag Lemieux, own Hanmer Home Hardware, and Ken Desjardins, (on the right in the photo) owner of Desjardins' Food Basics.

"Everyone moving in to a new home or apartment has a need for cleaning and repair supplies as well as start-up groceries," explained Mike Lemieux. "So Ken and I decided that we would put together a basket of 'goodies' to give as a gift to all newcomers to Valley East as our way of saying 'Thank You for choosing our town' and to give them a hand with settling in."

Ken Desjardins owns and operates one of the busiest grocery stores in the entire City of Greater Sudbury, so he has definitely noticed the impact of new home owners in the community. "When it comes to stocking up the shelves after moving into a new home, we know it is expensive. We also know that those first few days are days when you are constantly discovering additional items for your shopping list. The Hanmer Valley Shopping Centre is a great place to come to pick up just about everything you need to make your move complete, so we wanted to say thank you for your support."

Anyone who has moved into a new home; purchased an older home; or moved into an apartment in the Towns of Valley East or Capreol since July 1, 2006, is encouraged to drop in to see Mike Lemieux at Hanmer Home Hardware in the Hanmer Valley Shopping Centre. He will answer any questions you may have about the community and make sure you receive your gift basket. Several other mall merchants will be adding to the gift basket with items of their own, including Dixie Lee Restaurant which will be providing you with a $25 gift certificate so that you can eat out after your move in.

T.B.A. Wins Valley East Ladies' Slo-Pitch League & Playoff Championships For Second Year In A Row

T.B.A. / CORTINA Girls Capture League and Playoff Titles For 2nd Straight Year

The Valley East Ladies' Slo-Pitch League wrapped up the 2006 season with their annual banquet at Buddies' Restaurant on September 30, 2006. For the second year in a row, T.B.A./Cortina captured both League and "A" Playoff Championships. They took the playoff title by defeating Chico's Bowl in the finals.

A new entry in the league, R.L. Construction (The Chemy Girls) took the "A" Consolation title by downing Paula's K-9.

The "B" Champs for 2006 were Northstar Bedding who edged out Gerharts Critters for the title.

The "C" Championships were won by Aimee's Team over Val Caron Equipment.

League organizers felt that this was one of the best seasons ever for the league and could be looked upon as a turning point for Ladies' Slo Pitch in Valley East. With ten teams this summer, it is expected that the number of teams could grow to twelve for 2007.
