NOTES
FROM THE PUBLISHER - ROBERT KIRWAN
This
the 8th Weekly Issue of the Valley East Today Electronic
Newsletter, and as publisher, I couldn't be more pleased with the
reception it has been given in such a short period of time. All of the
feedback I have received has been positive and the number of people
offering suggestions for articles and features is growing every week.
The most encouraging thing I have heard has confirmed my belief that
each newsletter is being forwarded to thousands upon thousands of email
addresses by people who have a direct registration. It was always my
hope that if I could provide a wide variety of feature articles and
items of interest, the site would be forwarded to friends and
acquaintances which are already on computer address lists. What has
happened is that not only has this become one of the most effective
publications currently serviing residents of Valley East, but it is also
being read by thousands of people from across the entire region, and
indeed as far away as Germany and Florida.
As
the internet continues to grow in popularity as a communication tool,
the Valley East Today Electronic Newsletter and Community Web Site will
become more and more valuable as a source of information for local
residents. Awareness is critical to keeping a community alive
and we are convinced that the internet will provide us with the fuel to
help Valley East take on a true leadership role in developing a positive
image for the entire City of Greater Sudbury. I hope you enjoy the
feature articles and stories that are highlighted in this edition of the
Electronic Newsletter. If you find anything that you think might be of

There
are instances in everyone’s life when you are forced to stand up for
your principles and fight for what you believe in. Often you find that
you are the only one in the crowd with the vision to see into the future
and you find yourself in a struggle to open the eyes of those around
you. It is then that you realize that it is so much easier to follow the
crowd, but it takes courage and intelligence to hold your ground and be
different.

It
had been some time since Jack had seen the old man. College,
girls, career, and life itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved
clear across the country in pursuit of his dreams. There, in the
rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and
often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on
his future, and nothing could stop him.

Ken
Dryden Signs Autographs For Hockey Fans At The Mall
Ken Dryden will be remembered for his skills as a professional
goaltender with the Montreal Canadians and more importantly as the
goaltender for Team
Canada
in the famous 1972 Summit Series against the
Soviet Union
. He was at the opposite end of the rink when Paul Henderson scored the
winning goal that shook the world back on
September 28, 1972
giving
Canada
a 6-5 win that clinched the series.
Stopping
Pucks Was Easy Compared To What Gail Has Been Through
It was an absolute thrill for Gail Leroux, when Ken Dryden signed his
autograph on the poster she had made to promote the Cupid’s Night
Valentine’s Dance she is organizing to raise money for the March of
Dimes. Gail Leroux’s life changed forever when, at the age of 16, she
was involved in a serious car accident which claimed the lives of two
other teenagers and resulted in the eventual suicide of one of the others
who ended up with brain damage.
Ronald
Ross Celebrates 50 Years As A Barber in Hanmer
Ronald Ross may be
almost 70 years old, but he has no plans on retiring from his 50-year
career as a barber. When Ron
and his wife Gertrude married in June of 1960 and moved into their current
home in Hanmer, little did they expect that 45 years later they would
still be serving their loyal customers out of the very same room in their
original home.
Miss
Capreol Pageant Will Be Held At Our Lady of Peace Church
The 9th Annual
Miss Capreol Pageant will be held on
Sunday, January 29, 2006
. This year the event will be held at Our Lady of Peace Parish Hall
beginning at
7:00 p.m.
Miss Capreol 2005, Angel Boyle, who is shown in the above photo,
will pass on her crown to one of the nineteen contestants, aged 14 to 20
who will be vying for the honour of being the new representative of
Capreol.
Valley
East Minor Baseball Awards 2005 Scholarships
It seems like such
a long time ago that the Valley East Minor Baseball registrations were
being taken at the Hanmer Valley Shopping Centre. But now that the 2005
season is history, one of the most exciting events of the year, the
awarding of the annual university scholarships is in order.

Gerry admits that there are a lot of problems that must be addressed
in hockey today, "I think many of the problems would be solved if we
put more emphasis on having fun and less emphasis on winning. If you are
having fun, you will win your fair share of games. But if you are under
stress and pressure, winning is harder to come by and the game just isn't
fun any more."

A Passport Photo Is More Complicated Than You Think - Just Ask Ron Gladu
At first glance it would appear that taking a photo for your passport is a
relatively simple procedure. However, after speaking to Ron about this, it
is obvious why so many people complain about having their passport
applications rejected because of improper photos.

It's
Time To Register Your Cat or Dog
Once again, Lisa Froemmel,
owner of Pet Palace urges her customers to pick up their 2006 Dog and Cat
registration tags before the end of January. After January 31 it will cost
$10 more to get the tag so if you own a dog or cat, it simply makes sense
to register early. It is not worth the risk to go without registering your
pet since not only is the fine extremely high if you get caught, but you
may lose your precious cat or dog if it is ever lost.
Youth
Centre Is Open Friday Evenings For Teens
The Valley East Centre,
which is situated just across from the Centennial Arena is still open
Friday evenings for area teens. Susan Johnston, Chair of the Board,
extends a special invitation to all local teens to come out this one night
a week to share time with fellow teens.
Residents
Invited To Ask The Hard Questions To Municipal Politicians
A
special section of Valley East Today is being devoted to keeping local
voters informed about the positions taken on major issues by candidates
for the November 2006 municipal election.
Online
Catalogue Of Values Will Feature In-Depth Articles About Mall Merchants
Over
a dozen merchants from the Hanmer Valley Shopping Centre will be featured
in this special section of the Valley East Today Community Web Site. Every
month a new article will be added about each of the sponsors of this
exciting 'online catalogue'. The articles will help you become more
familiar with the goods and services being offered by the merchants.
This
Week At The Mall
"This Week At
The Mall" is a special feature found in The Vision Paper every
Wednesday. The online-version consists of a schedule of activities and
events that are planned to take place at the Hanmer Valley Shopping Centre
during the year. Community groups and organizations will find the online
catalogue to be a useful tool in planning their own fund-raising and
public awareness activities.

Walking Program Will Help Keep You Fit This Winter
There is no excuse
for not keeping fit during the cold winter months when you live in Valley
East or Capreol. If you do nothing else, you can at least spend an hour or
so three or more times a week walking laps in the Hanmer Valley Shopping
Centre. Five laps equals one mile - and it is warm, dry and pleasant.

Annual Royal Valentine Photo Contest Will Be Held On February 11
Nicole Lemay Photography and the Hanmer Valley Shopping Centre will
once again be sponsoring the 2nd Annual Royal Valentine Photo Contest this
year at the mall. The event will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2006
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. More information can be found by clicking on the

Minimum
Wage Will Increase on February 1, 2006
What will be seen
as welcome news for the thousands of people who are working for the
minimum wage may be seen as bad news for many businesses. On
February 1, 2006, the Ontario government is raising the minimum wage from
its current level of $7.45 per hour to $7.75 per hour. One year from now,
on February 1, 2007, the minimum wage will increase again to $8.00 per
hour.

Businesses & People Looking For Work Now Have A Chance
A new feature of the Valley East Today Community Web Site should
come as welcome news to residents and people running home-based
businesses in Valley East and Capreol. The Employment Services
Section will provide business owners with a central place from which to
find qualified staff for future vacancies. Instead of people looking for
job openings from businesses, it will be the businesses that will be
looking for qualified employees to fill vacancies that may or may not be
posted.

Employment Services Project Receives Public Stamp Of Approval
Hollie Robitaille
and Andrea Kennedy were very pleased with the response from the public
during the first day they held registrations for their new Valley East
Today Employment Services initiative at the Hanmer Valley Shopping Centre
on Saturday, January 14, 2006.

How
Many Times Will You Witness An Assault Against A Minor Hockey Player This
Season?
The hockey season was
barely a few weeks old when the assault headline appeared in the Toronto
Star. Unbelievably, a 38-year old father was charged with assaulting his
10-year old daughter after witnesses saw him grab her by the facemask and
scream at her as she came off the ice at a minor hockey tournament.
He apparently was upset with her poor performance in the game and she was
soon crying and acting terrified of her father. Have you witnessed or been
guilty of this kind of behaviour?
